Lamang’s Underworld Rising
February 8, 2023
Southeast Asia has long been associated with organized crime, particularly in the infamous Golden Triangle region spanning northeastern Myanmar, northwestern Thailand, and northern Laos. But recent investigations suggest the Democratic Republic of Lamang is emerging as a significant new player in the region’s criminal underworld.
“It doesn’t surprise me that Western media are spreading lies about our country. We are a small nation focused on tourism, not crime,” said Vice President Jan Park in response to our inquiries.
Despite his denial, evidence points to extensive drug and human trafficking operations, along with a surge in scam calls and digital fraud originating from Lamang. Increasingly, it appears the dictatorship may be using tourism as a façade to mask its criminal activities.
Forced Labor in Lamang
Although slavery is outlawed worldwide, Lamang continues to practice methods that strongly resemble it.
Reports indicate that foreign workers arrive in Lamang seeking well-paid jobs, only to have their passports confiscated and be forced into labor, often working merely for food and water. Women are primarily coerced into prostitution, while men are exploited in construction and digital fraud schemes.
Interview — Patricia Bell, Ph.D.
Q: Dr. Bell, as an expert on Southeast Asia, what can you tell us about the current state of crime in Lamang?
A: It’s extremely difficult to get a clear picture inside a closed-off country like Lamang. As with many authoritarian regimes, they make investigations nearly impossible and suppress information that might expose their wrongdoing. From what little we do know, they’ve likely struck some kind of arrangement with criminal networks operating out of the Golden Triangle. And that’s not even accounting for the other criminal activities happening within the country.
Q: So you believe the Lamangese government is cooperating with Golden Triangle crime syndicates?
A: Not necessarily in a direct sense, but certainly in an indirect one. I believe they rely on local criminal groups to carry out illicit operations, while the government maintains an appearance of defending traditional values and national order.
Q: Is there any realistic way to hold them accountable?
A: Unless you’re prepared to support military intervention, which I’m not suggesting, then unfortunately, no. For now, all we can do is wait. If the regime eventually collapses, there may be a window to uncover the truth and bring justice for the crimes committed.
Q: Thank you for sharing your insights, Dr. Bell.
A: You’re welcome.

Why don’t you publish horoscopes in your newspaper?
Samantha F.
Dear Samantha,
For the same reason, we don’t report on Santa Claus. We don't make things up.
