The M16A1 is a 5.56x45mm NATO, gas-operated, magazine-fed rifle adopted by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. It utilizes a direct-impingement gas system and features select-fire capability, allowing for both semi-automatic and fully automatic fire. Improvements over the original M16 included a chrome-lined barrel, birdcage flash hider, and a forward assist to enhance reliability in harsh conditions. The M16A1 became the standard-issue rifle for U.S. forces from the late 1960s through the 1970s.
