50 Years Since Liberation from Japan
September 16, 1995
Today marks fifty years of freedom from Japanese occupation. In 1941, the Imperial Japanese Army landed on our island, driving out the British. At first, we rejoiced, believing we had been liberated from oppression. But it soon became clear that the Japanese, who claimed to be freeing Asia, had only come to impose their own rule.
“I was eight years old when the Japanese arrived. We wanted to believe they had come as liberators, but instead, they seized control and forced us to work even harder for their imperial ambitions. The Lamangese must never again trust any outside power that claims to ‘help.’ If we seek true freedom, we must win it with our own hands.”
We wholeheartedly agree with the words of President Raksmei Sayavong.
Labor Shortage Resolved
The recent shortage of workers has been successfully overcome through government-led re-education programs, which enable citizens to transition into key industries.
“I was a high school teacher, but thanks to our government, I now have the opportunity to contribute to our nation’s growth in the construction sector,” said one program participant.
Commentary by Khamphanh Vongphachanh
The Japanese invasion of our island was an unprovoked act of aggression, cloaked in the false language of liberation. It struck a devastating blow to our collective psyche. One of the harshest awakenings in our history. For the first time, we realized that the threat to our freedom did not always come from white colonialists. This time, it came from fellow Asians.
The Japanese, proud of having preserved their independence from the West, looked down on us with contempt. They treated our people with cruelty and disdain, as if we were beneath them. Yet despite their brutality, we rose up and drove them back to their islands. And what was our reward? To see the British return, swooping in to steal the fruits of our sacrifice.
Do not trust the Japanese. They have not learned their lesson. Their government has yet to acknowledge the full extent of the wrongs committed against our nation. The remnants of their brief but brutal occupation still linger across our land, especially in the eastern reaches of Lamang, near Ban Pa.
We must never forget the crimes committed during those dark years.

Film Review by Nok Dam — Showgirls
Ever since seeing Paul Verhoeven’s sci-fi masterpiece RoboCop in 1987, I knew this director was utterly disillusioned with the so-called “American Dream” and presented a biting political commentary on rampant crime, corruption, and corporate overreach.
Now, Verhoeven is back again, and what he once did for violence, he now does with sex. Showgirls is a sleazy, vulgar, and borderline revolting. A film that perfectly embodies the culture that produced it. All the characters are despicable and learn nothing throughout the story. There is no resolution, no absolution, no happy ending. Verhoeven puts a mirror to the face of American society, which immediately cracks and is covered by various bodily fluids.
And unlike RoboCop, this time the audiences, faced with their own reflection, aren’t too fond of what they’re seeing...
Here’s hoping this unique and brave director keeps doing his part in the edification of the American people. Maybe next time, he could tackle the country’s imperialistic tendencies the same way he portrayed its lust for violence and carnal desires.
